Go Zig!

Efika MX Developer Edition video chat
Video chat Efika MX Developer Edition

The Efika MX Developer Edition is basically a netbook without the plastic shell. The Efika MX Open Client is made of the same basic board, but without the display or netbook only features.

You can use the Efika MX Open Client for video chat too

As the software is developed to get everything working, we will rely on the same methods we have used in the past to make the images available to all users.

The infrastructure is ready to go

A few years ago, we suggested a variation to the network is the computer: The Community is the Computer. As mentioned, we could have also titled that blog entry: It's not the Platform, it's the People -- nice work folks! That is Michal Schulz behind the camera (and the coding-compiling). Project #736 is moving along well.

Now, this starts to look like something! I suppose that case is just a mockup, so I can only elaborate on what is shown: The Genesi logo: Like it (I would remove the word, though). The power button: Too prominent, I also like it!

I like the name as it means something!

We had this debate internally. Just the colors, or name too? Or just the name?

We basically reasoned that in the market segments we're going into, we need the name at least for now. We aren't quite as famous as Apple (i.e. cannot just use a bitten fruit and be known).

When you see the system at a coffee shop and think it's cool, where would you go? Google? Would you search for "laptop with coloured bricks for a logo"? :)

Some day we can get rid of the name but not right now.

As for the power button it's meant to be easily accessible. The system is too small to actually rest anything on it, and if you put it on the side (like we did with the Efika 5200B Open Client, or pretty much any PC) you run the risk of jabbing it as you plug and unplug peripherals.

The last thing you need when working is to try and eject an SD card and accidentally nudge the power button (of course with Cloud City your session is still running on the server so a 30 second reboot later you're back in on that document, but... it will still annoy people, and even 30 seconds can cost money)

Hi, Atheist here,

What are you selling? There's a picture of a portable computer on the genesi website, but you do not have that, do you? So, the notebook computer will cost ~1,000+, not have software, and not have games. Very nice, and you don't even claim to have an OS either. I can't believe your still in business.

Atheist, you are a strange bird. Do you have a grip on anything you post about (not just here but on all the amiga websites)? Sean

@Anonymous atheist:

I have one right here.. it runs Ubuntu and has anything you can usually get on Linux.

No, it doesn't have MorphOS, no it won't run Crysis: Warhead.

The target price is about the same as any other Netbook on the market - but it has longer battery life and arguably better performance (especially when doing video decoding)

I realize that aggresive comments like the ones from "Atheist" are a neccesity: They trigger responses with valuable information. By the way, it would have been very easy for this blog administrators to simply delete this comment. Instead, it got published and answered. That's very nice.

So now, my turn...

"Hey Genesi, I dare you don't even have a prototype running, if you had, you would post photos and videos of the thing"

(me ducks)

A photo of it can be seen here!

(And for reference about whether this comes from Genesi or not, look at this Genesi picture as well, showing the Efika Open Client (5200b) and the LimePC, and note how the background is the same.)

A video showing the prototype running can bee seen here!
