Now, it is 2009. We can report that progress has not followed a straight line. Nevertheless, we persevere, and, Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) is still doing their part. Here are a few examples:

• Google Global Cache (GGC) is being implemented.

Last week the education technology event BETT was held in London. There is plenty to read on the official site, but we thought this was a particularly good report: Netbooks Open Linux Window at BETT with many interesting links and thoughtful discussion. In a few words: open source software verses Windows on inexpensive netbooks is opening up more possibilities to more people by pushing the cost lower and lower.

In April 2007, we wrote Just Enough Computing. At 690.9 MIPS/Watt, the 5200B provided a high level of integration and efficiency. The system-on-a-chip was developed for the embedded market. Featured on the $99 EFIKA and extended with ATI/AMD graphic support to the Open Client, many developers and users found the performance just enough to satisfy a host of computing tasks. Development around the platform continues.

We wonder how many people thought the real CES was in California this past week. Aside from Cisco's foray into the consumer space, there was not much new news from Las Vegas. Dell did announce a new luxury brand, Adamo, and a new line of netbooks, but frankly, it is all pretty much the same old thing.

heise online broke the press embargo: Freescale hints at Apple netbook - Updated. At least the PR folks should have recognized the Apple desktop.

Surprise, surprise...

Henri Richard, Freescale's chief sales and marketing officer, said the torrid growth of the netbook market made it impossible to ignore and that fears of cannibalization are overblown.
