We have been busy this past week. We are truly digging into the issues we have been discussing lately. We are trying to understand if it makes sense to develop a new EFIKA using the Freescale MPC8610.

Best of Show, Freescale Technology Forum 2005

Genesi has already demonstrated the Pegasos Home Media Center as an example of such a device based around existing Freescale Power Architecture technologies, at the Freescale Technology Forum 2005. Since then market trends have focused on using specialized processors which dedicate significant resources to decoding a fixed set of multimedia options and peripheral support from such vendors as SigmaDesigns, Broadcom, Texas Instruments (OMAP) and Ateme.

It has been four years since IBM published In search of a total system solution. Later, Freescale published the same article (here). It is hard to believe the webpages are still there. We will come back to that.

The Internet and technology that leverages it is driving an extreme amount of convergence. Business models are beginning to overlap significantly. Everything is a stake. There will be big winners and big losers. How about a few quick observations...

EFIKA Project #322 has been updated. The new CRUX PPC image also supports the Pegasos/ODW and the SAM440ep.

A Power Project for nearly a year

the Crux PPC Team is still going strong!

Almost a year ago to the day we wrote EFIKA Neapolitan. Giorgio Agrelli, Nico Macrionitis and Giuseppe Coviello keep pushing ahead.

From the CRUX for PowerPC Home Page: CRUX PPC is a lightweight GNU/Linux distribution targeted at experienced Unix users.

The latest Project Blog entries for Noel Lemouel and Johan Dams brought a big smile to both of us. EFIKA Projects 337 and 338 have been updated.

Power Projects for nearly a year

Cisco (Public, NASDAQ:CSCO) was at CES. The Booth was huge...

Getting a look around the Cisco Booth before the Show

What interests us as much is what they are doing this week at the National Retail Conference in New York. One of the highlights is the Digital Media System that elaborates on the advantages of networked devices to enhance a store's environment. It is also a story of employee enablement and technology made simple. We like this approach.

Akinori Tsuji's Solar EFIKA

Project #700

Akinori Tsuji updated EFIKA Project #700 late last week. We have discussed the project before (Akinori's EFIKA, Photovoltaic Open Client). Akinori will be presenting a Paper on the Project at a Conference in Japan in March. The title of the Paper is: The development of measurement equipment of temperature and humidity by using the embedded Linux.

Here is an 'interesting_ces' picture...

but, what has changed in five years?

The basic set-up is the same. The 2008 effort to invigorate PowerPC/Power Architecture technology was much more ambitious and well-support than the first CES effort we made five years ago. Nevertheless, the concepts are still the same.

As mentioned last year (THTF-Genesi, The World in Union, 5121Efika Advanced Development System), THTF has had the Genesi/EFIKA inspired LimePC at CES. THTF is an abbreviation for Tsinghua Tongfang Co., Ltd (Public, SHA:600100).

See the demo systems in this gallery - a full-sized PC

and a 42" LimePC-TV were also present

As shown at CES, the software springs from EFIKA Project #109.
