EFIKA Dortmund

Thursday this past week we wrote a blog about Project #314 and the diligent work of Guido Mersmann. Axel Knabe also deserves recognition for the hours he has spent working on the case.

Raquel, Axel, Guido, Bill - 06.30.07
It was very nice to meet them today!

Thank you Guido and thank you Axel for coming. The MorphOSMediaCenter looks great (it is clear that VailantVision can serve as a video and audio source for Reggae). We are thinking that early September would be a good time host an EFIKA MorphOS conference in Dortmund. We will start working on a plan...

CAC Salé - Some Progress Indeed!

We focused on Tanmia and their great work to advance Web 3.0 into Morocco in Get The Word Out! In Not Waiting for the World to Change II we featured the opening of the latest Community Access Center (CAC) in Salé. We cannot say we were too surprised to see how positive some of the first results have been.

Group3cac is bringing the future to Morocco

Congratulations Group3cac!

EFIKA AIGLX/XGL

EFIKA-AIGLX

Karoly Balogh has set up a nice 3D desktop for the EFIKA using standard Debian Etch packages. He has written a blog about it. Just in case you cannot read Hungarian, Karoly has offered to write a short How-To in English. We will post this to Power Developer shortly.

Nice work Karoly!

Let's Do The Shuffle!

Shuffle
Shuffle - a new game for MorphOS

Shuffle is a new game developed by Christian Rosentreter and set for release with MorphOS 2.0. We tried to buy a copy this morning, but Christian has not turned on PayPal yet and now it works!

Hey Christian! Let us do the Shuffle! thumbsup

In the meanwhile, if you attended PUSH in Sweden or SceneCON in Hungary this past weekend you saw this...

It is Time to Make the Net-Work

Walking around a market this morning in Brussels, we were reminded how good people can actually be to each other. Our senses were raised by the sounds of different languages, the scent and taste of different spices and foods, and the incredibly mix of cultures and people seen in such a small area. Belgium is very special for this. The Brussels we saw today was exceptionally friendly.

Brussels 6.17.07

For some time the Internet has been the world's largest public data network. There is a direct relationship between the value of the Internet and the number of sites and people connected to the Internet. As the Internet grows, the value of each site's connection and the potential of each person's contribution to the Internet increases. Access to an ever expanding user/customer population is key to innovation and higher levels of communication and education. That is where we are headed.

Brussels is a great place to get something new and big started!

SceneCON

SceneCON is this weekend in Budapest. SceneCON is a multi-platform demoscene party and computer arts meeting. It is being held for the second time. The organizers expect attenders to come from all corners of the computing world - retrosceners still active on 20 year old home computers such as the C64 and Amiga up to fans of the latest high-end computers, graphics technologies and consoles, such as the Playstation 3 and XBox360. Originally the organizers did not plan to be create an international event, but they have.

SceneCON Open Client
Have a look inside SceneCON and the Open Client this weekend

In the summer of 2003, the first SceneCON was held. One of the first Pegasos presentations in Hungary was made by Lajos Nagy. People were able to see some not yet published developments, as well as the available hardware at that time. There were seminars about many interesting projects, such as a Zeta presentation by Bernd Kortz.

In 2007, the aim is to continue this "tradition" with a few EFIKA presentations. MorphOS 2.0 will be shown as well as other operating systems running on the EFIKA. The partyserver, which - thanks to the members of local Pegasos and MorphOS user community - will be a Pegasos II computer, serving internet access and other LAN features up to 100 people with nearly 50 computers.

Other seminars include a J2ME game programming seminar (how to write games and multimedia applications to your cell phone in Java language). Don't worry if you cannot attend the party. You can watch SceneCON TV, the online stream. The stream URL will be published on the partypage (see initial link above) later this week. If you are in Budapest, please stop by!

EFIKA Worldwide

The EFIKA is a friendly computer. It is power-efficient. It is open to many operating systems. It is not expensive. It has many uses. EFIKA!

Johan, UNESCO Roundtable, Morocco

Could the EFIKA be your Amiga? The world's amiga? The Canonical folks are ready to support the EFIKA (vs. PowerPC) - a special Ubuntu image for a special piece of hardware. In the meanwhile, MorphOS 2.0 is near release, Tao Group is in Administration and OS4 is locked in a legal fiasco. So, let's jump ahead...

Encantados y Agradecidos: EFIKA FLISOL

THe EFIKA was recently demonstrated in northern Chile for the Festival Latinoamericano de Instalación de Software Libre.

EfikaFLISOL2007
Olivier Gautherot presents the EFIKA at FLISOL

I had about enough time to explain that it was running Linux, non-Intel architecture but PowerPC, sub-1GHz core frequency (just 400MHz), a ridiculous 128MB of SDRAM, around 4W for the whole motherboard... when the OpenOffice logo appeared on the screen! They were all glaring at the wall. They hardly noticed a few cables on the table - mainly the KVM for the keyboard support - but were well impressed by the fluency of the presentations, with effects that you usually see on big marketing shows, running on high-end laptops.

Hi Olivier! What can Google Apps do for the folks in northern Chile? Thanks for helping us raise the EFIKA. thumbsup Saludos!

Means to An End

The Foleo is out. The iPhone is coming, which may not be good for the Foleo. The Foleo is a mobile companion. It is for email. The iPhone is a phone, and a video iPod, and, and, and... let's see what happens.

New York Times - iPhone hype balloon
Fever Builds for iPhone (Anxiety Too)

The Foleo uses Linux, while Microsoft's software is used on most of the devices in the PDA market. Apple is set to introduce another operating system to this market. Palm is selling to their customer base and looking for developers. Apple is building a pervasive digital distribution system. The line between the end user device and the Internet is fading fast if not gone already. Remote synchronization is a must.

1. The possibility of Google Apps.
2. VPN integration over WIFI or GPRS/3G.
3. Citrix/MS RDP Remote Desktop integration.
4. GoToMyPC integration.
5. Video Conferencing/Desktop Sharing.
6. VNC, NX, and other Remote Desktop programs.
7. SyncML or Outlook Integration/Use.
8. Blackberry Enterprise Server Integration Use.
9. Instant Messaging.
10. VOIP.

The market's growth is compounded by the mirroring and the content contribution more users make to each other. It won't be much longer before folks realize that the end user device is the key.

Best Telematics Component Award

Freescale's MPC5200 processor and its comprehensive telematics development environment won the Best Telematics Component Award for its exceptional capabilities in enabling emerging vehicle telematics systems at the 7th annual Telematics Update Detroit Conference and Exhibition (Freescale PR).

The $99 EFIKA - on the Road to Mobility featuring the MPC5200 was another milepost. The Freescale MPC512X mention in that blog is another as the EFIKA and the Community evolve. That is the plan.

EFIKA on inch Sharp display with DVI I/F
This is another step in the right direction - EFIKA Project #337
The DVI I/F and the LQ070Y5DR04 (7" Sharp display) are working fine.

The 4U2 (eclipsis) will be a Power Architecture based portable device. The device will have 7 inch LCD, standard style keyboard and mouse options. Freescale's System on Chip Power Architecture CPU has been selected for it's exceptionally low heat output and power consumption. Selection of a non-x86 CPU was deemed a security advantage.

A Big PUSH for the EFIKA

PUSH is coming. PUSH is a computer party in Sweden which aims to unite all people interested in alternative platforms. PUSH is organized by the Pegasos User Group Sweden. With the support of Directron.com we have decided we are going to do something special to support this Event (...this time for more than a pizza PUSH!). But, first, what is happening out there in EFIKA-land?

Axel Knabe - Geit@Home, 25-28 May 2007
Axel Knabe and EFIKA - Geit@Home, 25-28 May 2007

In Germany, Axel Knabe has been working hard on his EFIKA for a while (and before that it was the PegasosPPC, see Axel Knabe Buero & Informationsservice - Meisterbetrieb). When he gets together with friends at Guido Mersmann's house there is a convergence of positive forces - Linux, MorphOS, OS4; many PegasosPPC, ODW, EFIKA and all mixed with good food and good people. Check out Geit@Home, 25-28 May 2007. We really appreciate the pictures and the report. Great!

We can expect more of the same at PUSH, and so we are going to start supporting these sorts of get-togethers. Starting with PUSH we will be shipping FIVE Open Client Plus machines with monitors and keyboards. Everyone will have a chance to test their code and run their apps. May the best demonstration win! It is time to make a Big PUSH for the EFIKA. Come to PUSH and win an Open Client Plus.

So, send us an email. We would like to support your event too! thumbsup

And, get registered. It is time for PUSH! thumbsup thumbsup
