More and More Stuff

We woke up this morning to read about the latest Google (Public, NASDAQ:GOOG) rumor. This time it is all about stuff - yours, ours, theirs, etc., etc. Don't worry we are not headed back to the Android discussion again (at least for now, well sort off...), but we are thinking about what we are going to do with all the digital data we are accumulating (related: Seeing Through the Clouds & Keeping the PowerPC Dream Alive).

Basically, the main theme is you put all your stuff on Google servers. Then, you can access it from wherever you want with whatever device you want. Presumably this would involve providing a certain amount of free storage to you, the Stuffer. Microsoft has a similar product in beta, SkyDrive (1GB of free storage), and another one on the way, Office Live Workspaces. It stands to reason that Microsoft with Hotmail would begin to have this sorted out. What better way to keep Microsoft at the forefront of the software and services market than provide free storage for all files using their software. That could work for Google Apps too.

In one form or another, Windows is everywhere (BTW, the new Apple "Don't Give Up on Vista" web-ad is great). The big way around, however, is Citrix. They are years ahead of their competitors (Microsoft, EMC/VMWare/RSA, Apple, Adobe) by virtue of their presentation layer and ability to run cross-platform with excellent Linux and Java support. They also work with VMWare to help support legacy applications without dedicating virtual hardware to the task. Continuously improving communication networks are making the use of this product a reality outside of dedicated leased lines -- and then what? Things are really heating up, and fast!*

Stuffed Turkey
Our cup runneth over...
Yippee! Lots of stuffing for everyone!

More and More Stuff is being created each day and we get attached to it. It makes us wonder whose data it actually is if we don't possess it ourselves, if we don't pay for the support, or, if we trade our impression/transaction in exchange for safekeeping/storage. We wonder, who is really being stuffed?!

* And, don't forget Tarantella (see screenshot from two years ago on the G4-based ODW). BTW, Sun also has purchased eGate (one of the premier EDI platforms), Waveset (single sign-on based on mySQL as the data store), and multiple other products which they could compete with against IBM and Microsoft, but that is another blog...

Thanks for the inspiration Mitch!
